I am going to update the hw blog regularly with materials students may utilize to keep their minds fresh over the next two weeks. Please keep in mind, the completion of the activities and readings are not mandatory, however if utilized, they will help students stay on course with the 5th grade level objectives. Feel free to explore the links I have set up below as an introductory over the next several days.

Book Report Project Update

The first part of the third quarter book report project is due on February 11th.
This part is the reading log.
Students are required to write three brief observations/reflections for each session read.
There is an accompanying paper showing examples that has been given to the students to help guide the reflection.
Students selected books on January 21st and were given six (up to this point) sessions in class to read and do the reading log. Students were told they are welcome to use their recess or any additional free time they may have to complete the reading and project. These times are in addition to their own time outside of school that has been used to complete the reading and project.
Overall the students have 21 days (Jan. 21st-February 11th) to have the book read and the log completed.
The reading log is worth 20 points overall.
2 points will be deducted each day this part of the book report project is not submitted.

The second part of the book report project is the comprehension packet.
Students need to write at least one complete sentence and cite the page they found the information in the book to answer each question from the story they selected.
The comprehension packet is due on February 18th.
The comprehension packet is worth 30 points.
2 points will be deducted each day the comprehension packet is not submitted.

The third part of the boo report project is the Figurative language packet.
I am offering assistance with in class right now.
Originally the due date was scheduled for February 25th.
The due date is being pushed back until February 28th.

Students have all materials they need to complete the project up to this point for the book report project.
There are extra copies of every sheet necessary in Mr. Walsh's classroom. Students have been told they may take any additional sheets they need at any time to complete the project.
Students are welcome to submit their projects early. There have been several students that may taken advantage of submitting work early thus far.

We discussed comparative and superlative adjectives today. Students were given a worksheet to complete in class. Students were told to complete the worksheet this evening if they were unable to finish it in class.

This evening students have comprehension questions to complete on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. short narrative.
Students began the symbolism of their family crest in class today. Students are required to develop a crest with 3-4 symbols. Students must then write what the symbolism is for each item/color on the back their crest.

The figurative language packets was distributed to the first and second classes today.
The third period class will receive their packets tomorrow.

We began exploring the rhythmic world of poetry today in class. We will continue discussing Poetry Collection until most likely Thursday and have an assessment on Friday.
We will have a small grammar assessment on Common, Proper, and Collective Nouns on Tuesday. I will do a brief review on Monday.
The students have been doing great with their third quarter book report projects thus far. We have devoted about 30 minutes over two class periods to get the students moving in the right direction with the reading and journals.
The comprehension and figurative language packets will be presented and sent home next week most likely on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Students received all the information for their reading logs for the I Survived book reports.
Students may read copies of the book they own or may use the classroom copy in Mr. Walsh's room. However, Mr. Walsh's copies must remain in his classroom so all students have the opportunity to use them.
